James M. Cain was an American novelist, journalist, and screenwriter whose work helped define the hardboiled strain of American crime fiction. His major novels — The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, Serenade, Mildred Pierce, and The Butterfly — earned him both critical attention and a wide popular readership.
Cain is probably best known for his crime novels The Postman Always Rings Twice and DOUBLE INDEMNITY, which director Billy Wilder turned into a film noir masterpiece starring Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson.
