Happy Birthday, ARVO PÄRT!! The Estonian "sacred minimalist" composer is 91 years old today. 🎂 🥂

Voces8 performing The Deer’s Cry by Arvo Pärt

"I had to get rid of everything unnecessary … in order to save myself.”

Arvo Pärt (born 1935) is an Estonian composer whose austere yet luminous music redefined sacred minimalism in the late 20th century. After early experiments with serialism, he withdrew from public composition in the 1970s to study medieval and Renaissance polyphony, emerging with his signature tintinnabuli style that evokes the resonance of bells. Works such as Tabula Rasa, Fratres, and Spiegel im Spiegel embody a spiritual clarity that transcends denomination, earning him recognition as one of the most performed living composers. His art, rooted in silence and devotion, bridges the ancient and the modern with profound simplicity.
