Tenggren was a Swedish-born illustrator and animator whose richly detailed fantasy imagery helped shape the visual language of twentieth-century fairy tales. Trained in Sweden and deeply influenced by Scandinavian folklore, as well as the work of Arthur Rackham, he became known for atmospheric scenes, silhouetted figures, and expressive, often caricatured characters. After immigrating to the United States, Tenggren built a successful career in publishing before joining The Walt Disney Company in the late 1930s, where his designs and inspirational artwork influenced classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Bambi during the studio’s Golden Age. Following his Disney years, he became one of the most beloved illustrators of children’s books, creating enduring images that blended Old World folklore with American popular culture.
