Ryabushkin completed his studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1892. Although his diploma painting, Descent from the Cross, was widely expected to win an award, it was denied official recognition because he departed from the approved design. The work impressed the academy’s president, Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, however, who personally funded a travel stipend for the young artist. Rather than follow the customary route to Italy or Paris, Ryabushkin chose to explore the ancient cities of Russia, including Novgorod, Kiev, Moscow, Uglich, and Yaroslavl. There he immersed himself in the country’s artistic and historical traditions, studying architecture, folk crafts, weapons, textiles, embroidery, and icons. He also read early Russian texts, collected folklore, and drew inspiration from the ordinary people he encountered, who became both his first models and his earliest critics.
