July 31 is the birthday of French Jesuit missionary to China and painter JEAN DENIS ATTIRET (1702-1768).
Jean‑Denis Attiret traveled to China in 1737, where the Qianlong Emperor appointed him “Painter to the Emperor,” a role that required him to adopt Chinese techniques and aesthetics so fully that his work soon became indistinguishable from native court painting. He produced meticulous images of natural subjects—trees, fruits, fish, and other animals—on glass and silk, and also created numerous portraits of imperial family members and courtiers. Over the course of his service, he is credited with more than 200 portraits, a substantial body of work that reflects both his technical adaptability and the visual priorities of the Qing court.
