On this episode of The KC Arts Beat Report, Patrick Neas speaks with acclaimed cellist Alisa Weilerstein, who opens the Harriman-Jewell Series season on October 9 at the Folly Theater with pianist Inon Barnatan.
Weilerstein discusses her nearly two-decade musical partnership with Barnatan, her lifelong connection to the cello, and the legendary artists who inspired her, including Jacqueline du Pré, Mstislav Rostropovich, Pablo Casals, and Gregor Piatigorsky. She also reflects on the cello’s unique expressive power, calling it the instrument closest to the human voice.
The conversation explores a program that spans some of the most beloved music in the chamber repertoire, including sonatas by Chopin and Rachmaninoff, Manuel de Falla’s Siete Canciones Populares Españolas, and selections from Dmitri Shostakovich’s Preludes in a transcription by composer Lera Auerbach.
