August 3 is the birthday of Russian architect and painter KONSTANTIN MELNIKOV (1890-1974).
Melnikov’s burst of architectural creativity, spanning just ten years (1923–33), set him among the vanguard of the 1920s avant‑garde. Though his work brushed shoulders with the Constructivists, he stood apart as a fiercely independent figure, unwilling to be hemmed in by the dictates of any school. When the 1930s ushered in the heavy hand of Stalinist socialist realism, Melnikov refused to bend. He stepped away from building altogether, turning instead to portraiture and teaching — pursuits that sustained him quietly through the remainder of his life.
