Melnikov’s burst of architectural creativity, spanning just ten years (1923–33), set him among the vanguard of the 1920s avant‑garde. Though his work brushed shoulders with the Constructivists, he stood apart as a fiercely independent figure, unwilling to be hemmed in by the dictates of any school. When the 1930s ushered in the heavy hand of Stalinist socialist realism, Melnikov refused to bend.
