Alfred Hitchcock not only directed movies, he directed the audience, tightening the screws until you squirmed and then smirked as you begged for more. Over six decades, he turned out more than 50 films, many of them still dissected in classrooms and devoured on late‑night screens. Dubbed the “Master of Suspense,” he became as recognizable as his stars, thanks to his droll interviews, cheeky cameos, and that macabre little TV gig, Alfred Hitchcock Presents. His work racked up 46 Oscar nominations and six wins, though the Academy never handed him Best Director. He did, however, win the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for lifetime achievement in 1968.
